The Amazwi Omame (Voices of Mothers) books are just that: they contain the stories of women. Some of the stories tell of cruel, inhuman violence yet they are told with courage and demonstrate the resilience of these women, who shared them so that future generations may gain insight into the lived experiences of some of those affected during what has been termed or described as ‘political violence’.
The heroes and famous leaders have been recognised and their stories told. These books tell of women from communities in the greater Edendale valley who have never been recognised. Their families and lives were severely and, in many cases, traumatically disrupted during the last years of the struggle against apartheid. As they shared their stories in groups in the communities where they now live, they were recorded, transcribed and are presented in the exact words in the Zulu language that they used. To enable a wider readership, English translations are included.
